2012 Try-out Information

Future, past and current Muff 'n Men, welcome to 2012.

Muff is Pittsburgh's Mixed team and after having placed 5th in the region 2 years in a row, is ready to take on its new region in its 6th year. As such, this is our open call for scrimmages and tryouts.

1. On 5/12, 5/19, and 6/2, Muff will host co-ed pickup/scrimmages. We encourage all those that have an interest in trying out for Muff or those simply interested in getting to know more about the community and even those who just want to play some ulti to come. We will be run pick up style, but the goal will be to actually make teams with RSVP's from folks to have mini round robin tournaments. Fields are Lower Ohara, 11am until 2pm. This is not closed in any way and, once announced, all are encouraged to RSVP. Forward this email to anyone you think would be interested.

2. There won't be one official tryout for Muff. We will have rolling tryouts. Basically, we will start practicing and make cuts and roster decisions throughout the season. Our tryouts will be rolling, meaning, we will follow the USAU guidelines and begin filling out the roster starting with our first tournament. However, we will not have final roster until necessary. Meaning we will accommodate tryouts until our final roster must be set. This way we can cater to not only college students, but our out of region and section tryouts. Any individual issues, or questions can be addressed to me at any time. If you are interested in trying out or attending the pickup, please introduce yourself, and tell us about your ultimate experience. Send an email to mnm2012 at themuffnmen dot com. Keep in mind, feedback will be given throughout the tryout process, in that we will certainly be able to give you an idea of your standing with the team and chances of making the roster. We understand that our tryout process will be later than many regional teams, and will accommodate all situations.

3. Formal tryouts/practices will begin the third weekend of June. Tryouts will run both Saturday June 16 and Sunday June 17 from 9 am to 1 pm. Fields TBA.

4. After the first tryout/practice on June 16 and 17, we will continue our practice/tryout schedule. Each will be two-day, 9am to 1pm tryouts/practices with fields TBA. This will mean that our practice schedule simulates tournaments and that we learn how to work through day-two fatigue, individually and as a team. We expect that each practice/tryout will have new folks who are coming out for the team, therefore, we will be making preliminary cuts after every practice/tryout. Of course, we expect everyone who is not cut, to come to every practice they can. Practices/tryouts this season are scheduled for:

6/16 & 17
7/7 & 8
8/4 & 5
8/18 & 19
9/8 & 9

5. You are probably wondering why we do not practice 2 times or more a week with mandatory workouts every week. This is by design and how our feedback came out and it will yield maximum attendance. We will have workouts and a workout schedule and are confident that not only will groups get together to do them, but everyone will take ownership of their role on the team and do what it takes. Muff does not want to manage players, but wants teammates who can manage themselves.

6. Given this schedule, our practices/tryouts will be more intense 2day tryouts/practices that will be well attended. We have breaks for the major fun tourneys (Wildwood, Mars) and holiday breaks. Although the schedule above is our formal schedule, we also anticipate organizing scrimmages and team pickup and parties/team building for off weeks.

7. Tournaments. Because of the new USAU guidelines, we will likely only attend USAU sanctioned tournaments. Currently, Philly Invite and Chesapeake open on July 21 &b 22 and August 25 & 26 (estimated) respectively. We may also attend another tournament in between, but as for now, these are the planned tournaments. Also, we will attend Sections and Regions (assuming we qualify) in mid September and October respectively.

8. Communication. We will be collecting pickup and practice RSVPs via Google Calendar. Once we receive your interest via an email to mnm2012 at themuffnmen dot com you will receive an invitation to our 2012 Google Group. Thereafter, we will make general announcements to the group and RSVPs will be made using the Google Calendar. Also, be sure to like us on Facebook and join up for other announcements.

Finally, those of you that are reading this, thank you for getting through the entire thing. I know it is detailed and long, but we are striving to be more organized this year and we wanted to answer as many questions as possible in the beginning. Muff has been Pittsburgh's Mixed team for 6 years. We have worked to become competitive in the Region and attract a diverse group of players who want to have fun and compete at a high level. We are truly thankful to be a part of this community and represent Pittsburgh. We expect again to have a fresh group of new faces and our team makeup will be based on merit and commitment. Our goal is to have fun and be competitive playing this game we love — remember, we don't get paid to play this game, so you better be having fun to justify this whole thing.
